About Bhutan

“Today, GNH has come to mean so many things to so many people but to me, it signifies simply – Development with Values. Thus for my nation, today GNH is the bridge between the fundamental values of kindness, equality and, humanity and the necessary pursuit of economic growth.”

His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck

A Remarkable Past

Tucked between two global giants, India and China, Bhutan has preserved its independence, cultural identity, and political stability for over a century. In 1907, Bhutan unified as a kingdom under the visionary Wangchuck dynasty. While modernization came gradually and mindfully, Bhutan took a bold step toward global engagement by joining the United Nations in 1971 and introducing the world to its revolutionary idea of Gross National Happiness in 1972.

In 2008, Bhutan transitioned peacefully to a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, ushering in a new era of political participation, while keeping the monarchy as a unifying symbol of national unity.

A Bold Vision for the Future

On December 13, 2023, Bhutan officially graduated from the United Nations’ Least Developed Countries category, a milestone that marks its growing global confidence and readiness for new partnerships.

The future is bright: From visionary ideas like the Gelephu Mindfulness City to groundbreaking conservation and education initiatives, Bhutan continues to reimagine what a flourishing, values-based society can look like in the 21st century.
