The Ministry of Education and the Bhutan Foundation jointly launched the School Design Guidelines for the school projects on June 24, 2020. With a mandatory requirement of sustainable and safe infrastructures for all school-going children, the guideline primarily focuses on proper planning, selection of new construction sites, resiliency for disaster, designing of safe structures, and maintenance at a later stage. The document covers different aspects of building construction such as architecture, civil, electrical plumbing, and sewer components.
The comprehensive guideline was initiated and developed by the School Planning and Building Division with technical support from ARUP–a UK-based organization that has worked on projects such as the award-winning green design of Druk Padma Karpo School in Ladakh. The guideline would provide a clear overview for architects, engineers, and builders while designing and implementing any new schools carried out at Dzongkhag and Thromde level.
The project was supported by the Bhutan Foundation.
