Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education holds particular importance in Bhutan’s developmental strategy, to cultivate the necessary skills and knowledge for a 21st century workforce. Hence, the development of a STEM Premier School has been identified as a priority program in the 13th FYP by the Royal Government.

Bhutan has experienced significant socio economic growth, largely due to its investment in modern education. However, despite this progress, the country faces rising youth unemployment and an education system that has yet to fully keep pace with rapid technological advancements and industry changes. As the global landscape continues to evolve, there is an urgent need for Bhutan’s education system to advance as well, to prepare a workforce that is globally competent and equipped for the demands of the future. Hence, the government has taken steps towards transforming the education sector and thus this strong focus on STEM education.

To contribute towards the establishment of a STEM premier school, the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, in collaboration with the Bhutan Foundation, will develop Drukgyel Higher Secondary School at Paro as a STEM-focused institution. The school will provide a specialized learning environment with lab facilities, qualified teachers, and curriculum that integrates cutting-edge technologies encouraging students to explore STEM disciplines. Funding for this initiative is provided by USAID through the Bhutan Foundation.

In addition, urban development has also been recognized as one of the key areas to be focused in the 13thFYP. The BEESA project will support the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MoIT) to build capacity for Engineers and Urban Planners implementing the Design Code for Urban Development, energy-efficient technologies, use of sustainable building materials and practices to minimize environmental impact. Further, the project will also support the preparation of Local Area Plans (LAP). Advancing sustainable and resilient infrastructure by focusing on energy efficient construction, quality improvements, and safety through seismic risk assessments and post-hazard evaluation will also be supported.

With a project investment of USD 6.3 million over the next four years, this initiative will be implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) and Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MoIT).

Together, we’re building a brighter, sustainable future for Bhutan!
