Anderson Center for Autism

The Anderson Center for Autism, founded in 2006, continues the work of Dr. Victor Anderson, who founded the Anderson School in 1924. The Anderson Center for Autism works to educate children and adults with autism starting from age ten and to give support to their family and caregivers. In addition to its more traditional programming, the Anderson Center offers a LifeLong Learning program, founded in 2010, that supports post-graduate adults and an Individual Residential Alternative housing program to prepare its graduates as they transition from school into adulthood. The Anderson Center provides a positive environment for growth, development, and education that is person-centered, and it advocates for the independence and self-sufficiency of all children with autism. The Anderson Center for Autism is partnering with the Bhutan Foundation to help build capacity of Bhutanese social workers and train them in providing appropriate services for individuals on the autism spectrum in Bhutan through their International Fellows Program.

The Brigitte Bardot Foundation

The Brigitte Bardot Foundation is a French foundation dedicated to animal protection created by French actress Brigitte Bardot in 1986. Since 1992, the foundation has been recognized as a “public utility.”

The Foundation is administered by a board of directors who guarantee the proper allocation of funds. The other directors are appointed for their commitment and their professional skills in the service of the animal cause.

The Foundation works and promotes on rights and the welfare of animals in different countries and regions. They focus on legal aids and investigations for animals, rescue, shelter, sterilization, adoptions, and financial support for organizations working on the cause of the animals.

The European Council for Nuclear Research

A resolution concerning the establishment of the European Council for Nuclear Research (in French Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire) (CERN) was adopted at an intergovernmental meeting of UNESCO in Paris in December 1951. Today, CERN unites scientists from around the world in the pursuit of knowledge. Their work helps to uncover what the universe is made of and how it works by providing a unique range of particle accelerator facilities to researchers, to advance the boundaries of human knowledge.

Their mission is to:

• Provide a unique range of particle accelerator facilities that enable research at the forefront of human knowledge.
• Perform world-class research in fundamental physics.
• Unite people from all over the world to push the frontiers of science and technology, for the benefit of all.

Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital

The Environmental Film Festival (EFF) in the Nation’s Capital is the world’s premier showcase of environmentally themed films. Through the annual festival, year-round events, and online resources, EFF seeks to advance public understanding of the environment through the power of film. Each March in Washington, DC, EFF hosts the largest environmental film festival in the United States, presenting more than 100 films to an audience of over 30,000. Often combined with thematic discussions and social events, films are screened at museums, embassies, libraries, universities, and local theaters. Many of the screenings are free, and all are open to the public. EFF also partners with filmmakers, distributors, and venues to present environmental films throughout the year. The Bhutan Foundation partners with EFF to bring environmental films from Bhutan to be showcased in Washington, DC, to increase awareness of Bhutan in the United States and provide opportunities for Bhutanese filmmakers to meet other filmmakers from around the world.

The Explorers Club St. Louis

The Explorers Club is an international multidisciplinary professional society dedicated to the advancement of field research and the ideal that it is vital to preserve the instinct to explore. Founded in New York City in 1901, The Explorers Club promotes the scientific exploration of land, sea, air, and space by supporting research and education in the physical, natural and biological sciences. The St. Louis Chapter of The Explorers Club was founded in 1988 by Audrey Spafford Jung who also served as the first Chairman. Audrey, a cave explorer, was one of the first women admitted as a member of The Explorers Club and the current Chairman is Ms. Marguerite Perkins Garrick. The St. Louis Chapter of The Explorers Club is a partner of the Bhutan Foundation supporting our research on tigers in Bhutan.

The GEF Small Grants Program

The GEF Small Grants Programme was established in 1992, the year of the Rio Earth Summit. It embodies the very essence of sustainable development by “thinking globally acting locally”. By providing financial and technical support to projects that conserve and restore the environment while enhancing people’s well-being and livelihoods, SGP demonstrates that community action can maintain the fine balance between human needs and environmental imperatives.

SGP recognizes that environmental degradation such as the destruction of ecosystems and the species that depend upon them, increasing levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, pollution of international waters, land degradation, and the spread of persistent organic pollutants are life-threatening challenges that endanger us all.

The program provides grants of up to $50,000 directly to local communities including indigenous people, community-based organizations and other non-governmental groups for projects in Biodiversity, Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation, Land Degradation and Sustainable Forest Management, International Waters, and Chemicals.

Harvard Humanitarian Initiative

The Harvard Humanitarian Initiative is an academic and research center for the study of humanitarian crisis and leadership supported by Harvard University’s Office of the Provost and based at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Department of Global Health and Population. HHI is working in the areas of populations in crisis, humanitarian data and technology, disaster resilience, and humanitarian policy to improve the strategies used for relief during times of crisis and conflict and to instill human rights principles and practices through these strategies. In addition, HHI is engaged in the education of a future generation of humanitarian leaders through their research and strategy implementation programs. HHI has substantive partnerships with UN agencies, governments, universities, and NGOs the world over working together to improve quality, effectiveness, and accountability. HHI is currently active in Bhutan where they are working with the Bhutan Foundation on the Emergency Medicine Program based out of the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital of Thimphu.

Health Volunteers Overseas

Health Volunteers Overseas was founded in 1986 by Dr. Garry Hough and Dr. James Cobey as an incorporated division of Orthopaedics Overseas. HVO was borne from the work that Orthopaedics Overseas had already done to help the health workers and their patients in developing countries to provide “a maximum good at a minimum cost.” The second part of HVO’s founding vision was outlined by Dr. Ralph Crawshaw: doctors would use their expertise in a more meaningful way by bringing that knowledge to the far-flung areas of the world that lack the same expertise and educational opportunities. HVO is committed to improving access to and quality of heath-care education, training, and professional development of health workers in resource-scarce regions of the world. Additionally, HVO strives to design and implement scalable and capacity-building projects that will strengthen and empower health workers worldwide. Since 1986, HVO has expanded its operations to over 25 countries with more than 85 projects and welcoming approximately 500 volunteers annually. Health Volunteers Overseas has been working in Bhutan for over 20 years, during which time they provided support and trainings to doctors, surgeons, nurses, dentists, and physical therapists building capacity in Bhutan. HVO is working with the Bhutan Foundation and Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital of Thimphu on emergency medicine programming to train health-care professionals on better emergency medical services practice.

HUMANE SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL

Humane Society International (HSI) is one of the only international animal protection organizations in the world working to protect all animals—including animals in laboratories, farm animals, companion animals, and wildlife. HSI has been working in partnership with the Bhutan Foundation and the Government of Bhutan, Department of Livestock, since 2009 to control and reduce the stray dog population in Bhutan. Through a CNVR (Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Release) method, this program has, today, spayed, neutered, and vaccinated up to 40,000 dogs throughout the country.

Internet of Elephants

The Internet of Elephants is a social enterprise based in Kenya and the United States. They are a collaboration of technologists, conservationists, educators, game designers, and strategists working together towards creating a stronger connection between people and wild animals. Their vision is to see a world in which we care about animals on a daily basis – what they do, where they go, who they meet, and whether they survive.

They intend to change that through the use of interactive games and education that take advantage of already existing data on real wild animals. They build innovative ways to engage a worldwide audience with wild animals through a combination of technologies that include GPS hardware, data, games, and social media.  The objective is to create a stronger, more vested connection between people and animals that directly influences consumer attitudes and behavior in a way that has a positive impact on wildlife populations worldwide while at the same time generating revenue for the sector.

Karuna Foundation

The Karuna Foundation supports organizations in developing countries in mitigating carbon emissions and helping humans and ecosystems adapt to the changes associated with climate change. This mission comes from a belief in the need to atone for the environmental sins of unrestrained industrialization of the developed world, which is responsible for much of the climate change we are experiencing today. The world’s poor who are living in the developing world are feeling the effects of climate change most harshly, and it is the aim of the Karuna Foundation to mitigate further disruptions and provide support to the populations feeling the effects of climate change. The Karuna Foundation is currently working in partnership with the Bhutan Foundation on the Himalayan Environmental Rhythms Observation and Evaluation System (HEROES) Project in collaboration with the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment. Together, we are also working on broader projects for environmental conservation and awareness throughout Bhutan by supporting the Bhutan Ecological Society, UWICE, and the Royal Institute of Law.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was founded in 1958 to encourage peaceful applications in space science. NASA facilitates the expansion of our understanding of the Earth and the universe through human spaceflight programs and unmanned robotic missions around the solar system. In addition to looking outward, NASA scientists also use technology to look inward, researching Earth science and climate change. Education and outreach is also a major part of NASA’s mission, as they engage with the public, educators, and students to facilitate curiosity and knowledge in STEM.

National Geographic Society

The National Geographic Society was founded in 1888 with a belief in the power of science, exploration, and storytelling to change the world. The founding mission, as envisioned by a small cohort of explorers and academics, was to increase geographic and cultural knowledge of our world. This is a mission that has grown over the years, and today, National Geographic publishes content pertaining to geography, natural sciences, archeology and historical conservation, and promotion and conservation of the environment. Every year, National Geographic funds hundreds of research, conservation, and education programs around the globe. Its projects culminate in the production of a wide range of media, including digital, print, and television, that reaches an estimated 625 million people. Its publications are published in 40 languages in addition to its original English format.  In addition to these monthly publications, National Geographic produces content to reach more targeted audiences and hosts prestigious annual and biennial scholastic competitions on spelling and geography, both at the national and international level. Its vision is to inspire, illuminate, and teach through scientific expeditions, award-winning journalism, and education initiatives supported through donations, purchases, and memberships. The relationship between the National Geographic Society and Bhutan is older than Bhutan’s relationship with almost any outsider and dates back to 1914. In April 1914, John Claude White introduced Bhutan to the world with the publication of the April issue of “Castles in the Air: Experiences and Journeys in Unknown Bhutan.” Bhutan and National Geographic share a unique vision for the preservation of both the cultural and historical past as well as the environment. Today, National Geographic continues its partnership with Bhutan through the Bhutan Foundation after celebrating a century of collaborative exploration and education, including tiger and snow leopard conservation and support for archaeological studies.

Perkins International

The Perkins Institute is a progressive, multifaceted organization committed to improving the lives of people with blindness and deafblindness around the world. The Perkins mission is to prepare children and young adults who are blind or deafblind with the education, tools, and skills they need to realize their potential. The Perkins organizations include not only the original founding school for the blind, but also Perkins International, Perkins Solutions, Perkins eLearning, and the Perkins Library. Perkins International was founded in 1989 with the sponsorship of the Conrad H. Hilton Foundation. It was with this funding that the good and necessary work of the school was broadened, and its work was taken overseas. Perkins International currently has operations in 67 countries worldwide. It is estimated that Perkins International reaches upwards of one million individuals worldwide, up more than 800 percent in the last five years alone. Perkins International is working in parternship with the Bhutan Foundation to address the needs of children with moderate to severe disabilities. Perkins International will be working with the Ministry of Education of Bhutan, in collaboration with the Bhutan Foundation, on various special educational programming starting work in-country in Spring 2016.

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center was founded in 1956 in Westchester County, New York, after the Women’s Committees of Tarrytown and Ossining Hospitals acquired it. It was this group of women who formed the Phelps Memorial Hospital Woman’s Auxiliary in 1952, which would later become simply the Phelps Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Since its inception, Phelps Memorial has expanded its practices in emergency medicine, joint replacement, gastroenterology, pulmonology, psychiatry and mental health, as well as rehabilitation services. Phelps’ mission is to improve community health through education, preventative medicine, and treatment in a patient-centered environment. Phelps Memorial Hospital works to provide comprehensive care to its patients at reasonable cost in an efficient and effective manner and in a way that meets the medical, social, and mental needs of patients at every stage, from prevention to post-treatment rehabilitation. The Bhutan Foundation partners with Phelps Memorial Hospital in sharing its expertise and its experience in emergency medicine with the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital in Thimphu, Bhutan, and more broadly with Bhutan’s Ministry of Health. Through the support of Phelps Memorial Hospital, the Bhutan Foundation has set up Bhutan’s Emergency Education Center, which trains every single doctor in the country in emergency medical services.

Rubin Museum of Art

The Rubin Museum of Art is an arts and cultural hub situated in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood that encourages its visitors to make connections between contemporary life and the arts and culture of the Himalayas, India, and neighboring regions. The Rubin houses a vast array of exhibitions from ancient to contemporary works in its special exhibits and offers a wide variety of programming (films, concerts, and dialogues) that hope to inspire personal discovery and illumination toward new ways of seeing the world through cross-cultural connections. The Rubin values community access and engagement in an environment that fosters creativity and further scholarship. The Rubin brings art and culture to all, the old-aged and youth alike, through their educational, family-oriented, and unique programming for those with dementia and Alzheimer’s. The Rubin Museum has worked in collaboration with the Bhutan Foundation to bring programming on Bhutan to New York City. Most recently, the Rubin and the Bhutan Foundation worked to bring The Dragon’s Gift: The Sacred Arts of Bhutan to the Special Exhibits collection at the Rubin.

The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation

The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation was founded with the belief that art is a cornerstone of cohesive, resilient communities and leads to greater participation in civic life. The mission of the Foundation is to make art more accessible to underserved communities in New York City. The Foundation provides support, through their partnerships, to cultural organizations and social justice advocates in both the private and the public sectors working to better serve underserved communities. The Foundation’s grant-making endeavors and experimental cross-disciplinary collaborations connecting art and social justice bring meaningful change to organizations and areas of New York City in need. The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation has worked in partnership with the Bhutan Foundation on several projects, including controlling the dog population in Bhutan, implementing public health initiatives, and creating greater awareness of Bhutan.

Smithsonian Institution

The Smithsonian Institution was founded in 1846 based on the legacy of British scientist James Smithson, who had a vision for establishing an institution in Washington for “the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men.” Today, the Smithsonian is the world’s largest museum and research center with 19 museums and galleries, nine research facilities, and the National Zoo in Washington, DC. The Smithsonian is a large production, employing 6,400 employees, including 500 scientists, and an additional 5,500 volunteers, all of whom research and/or curate a collection of more than 138 million objects, works of art, and specimens. In 2014, an estimated 28 million people from around the world visited the Smithsonian. The Smithsonian continues its mission toward the diffusion of knowledge through the preservation of heritage and history, the discovery of new knowledge, and the sharing of resources with the world. The Smithsonian provides its services free of cost to all, which it considers to be center to its mission. The Smithsonian Institution is contributing to environmental conservation programs in Bhutan. It also hosted the 2008 Folklife Festival in Washington, DC, featuring Bhutan.

Snow Leopard Conservancy

The Snow Leopard Conservancy was founded in 2000 based on the prior experience of its director, Dr. Rodney Jackson, who brings more than 30 years of experience working exclusively in south and central Asia with wild cats, particularly snow leopards. The Conservancy’s mission is to advance community-based stewardship of the snow leopard through education, research, and grassroots conservation action. The Conservancy engages communities to reorient perspectives of these animals from menace to valued community asset, and to encourage a healthy and sustainable relationship between these great cats and the humans who share the same environment. It is through this work that they hope to deepen understanding of these creatures, combining Western science with indigenous knowledge to provide a linkage between biodiversity conservation, reciprocal contribution, participation and responsibility, and monitoring and evaluation. This work is carried out in 7 of the 12 countries where snow leopards can be found: Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, and Russia. The Snow Leopard Conservancy is working with the Bhutan Foundation on the Jomolhari Snow Leopard Conservation program. The program’s other partners include the Jigme Dorji National Park, the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment, and Bhutan’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forests.

Tsao & McKown Architects works in partnership with the Bhutan Foundation on the restoration, adaptive reuse, and curation of Wangduechhoeling Palace, the birthplace of Bhutan’s monarchy. United States Agency for International Development

University of California San Francisco

The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care. It includes top-ranked graduate schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy; a graduate division with nationally renowned programs in basic, biomedical, translational and population sciences; and a preeminent biomedical research enterprise. It also includes UCSF Health, which comprises top-ranked hospitals, UCSF Medical Center, and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals – and other partner and affiliated hospitals and healthcare providers throughout the Bay Area. The University of California San Francisco is currently partnering with the Bhutan Foundation on public health research and capacity building of healthcare providers in Bhutan. This program is in collaboration with the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB) and the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH).

UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA

Nestled in the heart of western Montana’s stunning natural landscape, the University of Montana is a place where top-tier students, educators and researchers from across the country and around the globe come and thrive. UM is located in Missoula, Montana’s second-largest city with a population of 80,000 residents. The University draws a diverse population to Missoula and helps cultivate an educated, engaged, and vibrant community. Roughly 15,000 students attend UM and Missoula College, where they receive a world-class education in a broad range of subjects that include the trades, liberal arts, graduate and postdoctoral study, and professional training. The main campus spans 56 acres at the base of Mount Sentinel along the Clark Fork River and includes the park-like Oval at the center of campus, more than 60 architecturally unique buildings and a 25,200-seat football stadium. UM’s 180-acre South Campus offers student housing, a golf course, soccer fields, and an outdoor track facility. Missoula College occupies two sites in central and west Missoula.

U.S. AMBASSADORS FUND FOR CULTURAL PRESERVATION

The US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs established the Ambassadors’ Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) as an opportunity for sitting US ambassadors to participate in social diplomacy in addition to their political capacities. The Ambassadors Fund promotes mutual understanding between the United States and its foreign partners through educational and cultural engagement. AFCP supports projects for the restoration of ancient and historical buildings, the assessment and conservation of rare manuscripts and museum collections, the preservation and protection of significant archaeological sites, and the documentation of vanishing traditional craft techniques and indigenous languages. In addition to providing support for the aforementioned projects, AFCP also provides support for other cultural programming and educational exchanges. The U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation is working in partnership with the Bhutan Foundation in supporting the restoration, adaptive reuse, and curation of the Wangduechhoeling Palace, the birthplace of Bhutan’s monarchy. The other partners of this project include the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs, Tsao & McKown Architects, and the World Monuments Fund.

Wildlife Conservation Society

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) was founded in 1895 with a mission to save wildlife and wild places around the globe through science, conservation action, education, and inspiring people to value the nature that we all rely on. WCS hopes to create a world where wildlife thrives on Earth with a society that embraces wildlife diversity and values the integrity of life throughout the Earth. WCS sees that there are four primary issues around wildlife and wild habitats: climate change, natural resource exploitation, the connection between wildlife health and human health, and the sustainable development of human livelihoods. The Wildlife Conservation Society is currently working broadly on environmental conservation in Bhutan and more specifically on snow leopard conservation programming.

World Wildlife Fund

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was established after the signing of the 1961 Morges Manifesto calling for an international organization to advocate and fundraise on behalf of existing conservation groups to further the conservation movement on a worldwide scale. WWF works to conserve nature, reduce the most pressing threats to the diversity of life on Earth, and build a future in which people live in harmony with nature. The efforts of WWF focus on protecting and restoring species in their habitats; strengthening local communities’ ability to conserve the natural resources they depend upon; and transforming and reconciling human need, markets, and policies to reduce the impact of production and consumption. World Wildlife Fund has been very active in Bhutan over the years. Currently, WWF is working on ongoing general conservation projects in the national parks and forests of Bhutan. The Bhutan Foundation supports WWF in its conservation efforts toward preserving Bhutan’s natural environment.

Yale University

Yale University, School of Public Health, was founded more than a century ago and focuses on research, policy analysis, and training of researchers, practitioners, administrators, and educators to go out into the world to provide a positive impact on the health of populations both in the United States and abroad. The School of Public Health provides Masters of Public Health and dual degree Ph.D. offerings to its enrolled students, which focus on preparing them to apply the knowledge they have acquired in the classroom to everyday situations following the receipt of their degrees. The program includes a wide study on health issues facing the world today, from the study of air pollution effects on respiratory health to the prevention and treatment of cancer and HIV/AIDS to greater research on global health governance and health-care policy and management. The Yale Himalayas Initiative is a unique program that works to support the development of undergraduate and graduate study of the Himalayas: history, culture, and language. The work away from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, includes the development of new and existing partnerships between the University and research institutes and NGOs to create research agendas and methodologies to promote scholarly and practical outputs. In this capacity, the Initiative has also facilitated workshops and conferences to bring scholars of the region together around themes of interdisciplinary and transregional interest. Yale University’s School of Public Health and the Yale Himalayan Initiative are currently partnering with the Bhutan Foundation on issues concerning national public health systems development in Bhutan. This program is being co-developed in collaboration with the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan and the Ministry of Health.
